DDEX is an acronym for Digital Data Exchange, which is a format to standardize and unify communication and information sharing between entities in the music industry. In other words, it is a standard to help streamline the messages that go between music companies in order to define who owns what music and who gets credit for it.

Before DDEX, each company in the music industry had its own file format and way of communication, that was extremely inefficient and time-consuming and comes with high cost, not to mention that the music supply chain is very complex with multi-level parties each of which has a unique role, so it was an urgent desire to come up with a standardizing solution to help sort out this communication.

After DDEX was invented in 2006, by a group of organizations, They started the DDEX institution to facilitate digital music distribution across platforms, which requires a common standard to share information about tracking, monetization rights, sales, royalty, and distribution. This data is required to be transferred into a common format to be delivered in a proper manner which gives real-time access to each partner in the chain, to access the information.
